EASY WAYS TO MAINTAIN COLOR-TREATED HAIR

I have been getting my hair dyed since middle school so know how easy it is to damage your hair and have your hair color turn brassy, orange, or yellow. I have multiple hair horror stories from my early dying days that I hope to never repeat lol. Color-hair maintenance is so important because once your hair is unhealthy it’s often difficult to get it to be healthy and vibrant again.

I’m actually pretty low-maintenance when it comes to hair. I hate putting products in my hair and don’t like spending more than 7-minutes on my hair when getting ready. You might be wondering, why are you writing a blog post about hair then? Well, it’s because I’ve learned simple ways to maintain color-treated hair which has helped me achieve an effortless way to keep my hair looking vibrant.

EASY WAYS TO MAINTAIN COLOR-TREATED HAIR:

  1. Use purple shampoo if your hair is dyed blonde/yellow or blue shampoo if your hair is dyed brunette/brown. Since purple and blue shampoo can be drying, I found that mixing it with my normal color-treated hair shampoo works best. I’ll usually mix in half with my normal color-safe shampoo. My favorite blue shampoo is this Pravana Perfect Brunette Shampoo and my favorite purple shampoo is this Joico Color Balance and Clairol Shimmer Lights Shampoo (more budget-friendly). These are great for everyday maintenance. If your hair is very brassy or yellow, Fanola has a great line of shampoo for deep toning and you can leave it in your hair longer to make it more effective.
  2. Get your hair toned regularly. I try to get my hair professionally toned every 8-10 weeks. The great thing about getting your hair toned is that it drastically improves the color of your hair, helps keep your hair shiny, and is a lot cheaper than getting your hair dyed. Madison Reed is a great salon that specializes in toning your hair and is pretty affordable (~$40). When I go to a professional salon in San Francisco, it’ll usually cost me around $60 to get my hair toned.
  3. Wash your hair in lukewarm water, never hot. The minute you wash your hair with hot water, it’ll strip the color away and make it fade faster. Whenever I wash my hair I always turn the temperature knob down so the water is cooler. It might sound OCD, but I’ll literally change the water temperature anytime my hair needs to get soaked in water. This will help preserve your hair color and brilliance.
  4. Deep condition your hair once a week: The con of getting your hair dyed is that over time your hair may become more brittle and dry. The best solution is to replace your normal conditioner for a deep conditioner once a week and let it sit in your hair for 5-10 minutes. You can also use a wide comb to brush the conditioner through your hair to ensure it’s evenly saturated. Deep conditioners and hair treatments will instantly make your hair softer, smoother, and more manageable. Some of my favorite deep conditioners are Joici K-PAK Intense Hydrator and Nature Republic Argan Essential Deep Care Hair Pack.
  5. Go light on the heat styling: Believe it or not, I rarely blow dry my hair. I usually shower at night, let my hair air dry and will heat style it (curl or straighten it) in the morning. Since heat damages your hair and can even make your hair turn brassy or yellow faster, try to minimize the amount of heat styling you do. There are days when I won’t even do anything to my hair and let it be completely natural. If it’s feeling unruly, I’ll tie it half-way up or in a high ponytail which is a great alternative to heat-styling.
