I played tourist in my own city of San Francisco this Memorial Day weekend. One of the benefits of staying local during holidays is that most people travel, making the city quieter. Thus, Josh and I visited the Golden Gate Bridge on Saturday which happened to be its 80th birthday. It couldn’t have been planned more perfectly, and it was a beautiful day to admire one of the most recognized symbols of San Francisco and the most photographed bridge in the world! To commemorate the bridge, I found some fun facts to share. 🙂

5 Fun Facts about the Golden Gate Bridge.

  1. The bridge is named after the Golden Gate Strait, which is the entrance to the San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean.
  2. It took 4 years to build and construction began on January 5, 1933, during the Great Depression.
  3. The bridge opened on Pedestrian Day, on May 27, 1937, and over 200,000 people lined up to see the bridge.
  4. Before the bridge, the only short route between San Francisco and Marin County was by boat.
  5. The U.S. Navy originally wanted the bridge to be black and yellow to ensure visibility of passing ships, yet the bridge was painted orange because the color compliments its natural surroundings and enhances the bridge’s visibility in fog.
