EASY WAYS TO DECORATE A PRODUCTIVE HOME OFFICE SPACE

Before COVID-19 I rarely worked from home and didn’t have a home office set-up. Since it’s unknown how long we’re going to be working from home (I’m currently on my 8th week of WFH) I decided it was time to create a comfortable home office space. Luckily, I already had a desk and chair so I just needed to decorate the space in a way to make me feel motivated and like I was “at the office”. Here are some easy tips to decorate an instaworthy and productive home office space.

EASY WAYS TO DECORATE A HOME OFFICE SPACE:

  1. If you don’t have a window view (which most of us probably don’t), incorporate plants in your “view” to mimic the outdoors. Plus, plants help clean the air! Snake plants are my favorite low-maintenance plant and are great for indoors since they don’t require a lot of light. The plant on my desk is a bromeliad, which requires a lot of indirect light.
  2. Add personal touches. One benefit of working from home is that you can put more unique/personal items on your desk without anyone judging you. Maybe it’s a funny picture of you and your family or a random trinket that you love. For me, it’s a wedding photo of me and Josh. I also love high-end candles so have a few of these on my desk. It’s a good reminder to keep working hard to be able to afford these candles haha.
  3. Have something symbolic of your past, to remind you of how far you’ve come. Sometimes it shocking to me how much I’ve achieved considering how ratchet I used to be. I was never considered a good student during K-12 and was often a trouble maker. It wasn’t until college that I became motivated and realized my potential which I then put to use. My degrees remind me of all the stepping stones I took to get to where I am and that anything is achievable as long as you put your mind to it.
  4. Keep your favorite motivational or business books on hand. I love having self-improvement books on hand for those moments I’m feeling confused or unmotivated. Having these books within my reach and even just being able to read the title from my seat sometimes gives me the push I need. Here are some of my favorite books in the self-improvement category:
    1. Designing Your Life: an easy book that helps you re-evaluate the things in your life that make you happy and fulfilled on a personal, career, and hobby level.
    2. Business Model Generation: this was a required book during my MBA studies and it’s stuck with me since. It lays out all the foundations to make a business successful and helps you visualize it in a straightforward way.
    3. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: a classic that everyone should read. Whenever I’m feeling aggravated, stressed, or any negative emotion this book (and even just the title) reminds me to chill and that there are so many other ways to channel your energy.
  5. Make it tidy by having a place for everything. So I’ll be honest, I usually have a ton of post-its on my desk and cleared them all for the photo. But post-its are the only thing on my desk that I allow myself to be messy about and even then, I have a place for them which is on my monitor. When your space is clean, there are fewer distractions and it helps you feel more organized and “on top of it”. Try to limit the amount of stuff you have on your desk and if you have paperwork, pens, etc. make sure there’s a place for it. All my paperwork and notebooks are stored in my drawer.
