This post is for all your shorter ladies out there. Isn’t it frustrating when you’re shopping for a dress and they drag on the floor, even with heels on? I’ve spent so much money and time altering dresses and finally figured out a way to buy dresses that don’t require any hemming. Lucky for you, I’m going to share my secret on how I managed to find dresses that fit shorter women perfectly and don’t require any alterations! Also, I’m 5’4″ for those wondering.
How to Shop for Dresses if You’re Short
- Buy midi length dresses: This dress I’m wearing is actually a midi dress. If you look at the model, you can see that it hits her above the ankles while it hits me below the ankles. I’ve started filtering for “midi” dresses when I shop anticipating that it’ll look like a maxi dress on me. Depending on the style of the dress, it usually always looks appropriate and most people can’t even tell that the dress was intended to be a midi in the first place!
- Find stores that offer petite sizing: it took me a while to find stores with a great dress selection that also offer petite sizing. These stores are Asos, Topshop, and The Reformation. Some of my favorite places to buy dresses from and all at affordable price points.
- Find dresses with a cinched waist: similar to this dress from Express (& look, it’s also a midi). Dresses with a cinched waist are great if you need the dress length to be 1-2 inches higher. The cinched waist allows you to adjust the dress to sit higher without being noticeable. If you need something to keep the waist in place, a belt is perfect and also adds an accessory to your outfit. Wrap dresses (like this one) have been my go-to when shopping in this category since they’re flattering and there’s flexibility in the way you can tie it around the waist.
Also, if you’re shopping for bridesmaid dresses check out Azazie! They literally have dresses in every color, style and size. It’s a great store to check out for dresses to wear for any occasion. I hope all these tactics help! Please let me know if they do!
