THE SECRET TO MAKING BASICS LOOK ON POINT

Wearing Comme Des Garcons play shirt, ASTR blazer, Levi’s 501 selvedge jeans, Gucci double g belt, Chanel classic flap bag (preowned one here), and Vince Camuto heels.

If I could, I would live in a basic white tee and denim pants. Some call this the classic California look, others call it being basic, but to me, I call it the fashionably effortless cool-girl look. I know what you might be thinking, I own a basic white tee and several jeans, and it doesn’t look that fashionable… Well, I’m going to let you in on my secret on how to make basics always look on point.

It’s ALL about the fit. I cannot emphasize enough how important fit is when it comes to basics. For the longest time, I never wore clothes that properly fit me. You’ll be surprised but most women don’t buy clothes in their proper size until their late-20’s! It’s not because we don’t want to, but because most don’t understand their own body size until then. For me specifically, I’d usually buy a size small assuming it fit me fine since, well it fit! It wasn’t until I got older that I realized my true size was an XS and XSP. An XS would hug my body the way it should, make me feel more comfortable, confident, and also look more flattering on me. Now I don’t even look at clothes if it doesn’t come in my size. When it comes to jeans, they should fit you perfectly around the waist and there shouldn’t be any extra room in the butt, thigh or legs (unless they’re a loose fit like boyfriend jeans). Most importantly they should be altered to fit your height. If you have the same petite problem like me, roll up your jeans or buy cropped jeans. If you’re tall, well consider yourself lucky! An additional trick I always like to do to polish up a denim outfit is to belt it. If I want to go the extra mile, I’ll also throw on a pair of heels since heels make everything look better. So the next time you’re out shopping for basics remember the rule if it doesn’t fit perfectly, don’t buy it.
